We must remember the price paid for our
Independence. The many lives that were given and sacrifices made so
that we might enjoy "Freedom" and peace here at home.
I am looking at the flag and remembering a day not too long ago
Sept 11 when we were all united and everyone was flying their flag. We
had a common unity and purpose. That unity has faded into yesterday
and we are now "divided" in many arenas , but i still feel a oneness
here, I know that we are not divided on the BIG issues of the day. The
media would like us to think so,thaty everything is terrible, but i
don't trust them for much of what i believe. What i believe is in my
heart and was given to me through the sacrifices of others. It was
handed down from generation to generation, i got it from my parent's,
you got it from yours ,they got it from thier's. It's a belief in
America and Americans, to pull through and get up and over any
obstacle and to have the courage to fight to make the world a better
place for everyone. A place where ALL people are free, not just
Americans. This is the greatest of hope's and it is our duty to do it.
I believe that this is the greatest country on the planet. It is
our country, not right or wrong, but right and wrong. We make our
mistakes but we as the people of America, AMERICANS, always find a way
to get the job done. I am PROUD to be an American. Proud of our
founding fathers, our many patriots who gave their lives to defend
this great cause and this great country. Proud of the veteran's of all
wars who have made many sacrifices, thousands paving the way to our
freedom with their blood. I am proud of the free spirit and the open
market society that allows competition to thrive so that we can
continue to progress towards a better way of life for our children and
their children. I love the fact that nobody places limits on me except
myself and i can accomplish as much as i set my mind to. Where else
could a guy who is relatively unknown except in a small circle of
people, make a living playing music. I play my music where i want to,
when I want to. That is freedom and i treasure it in all it's many
forms. The hard working people of America who each day, get up and
get it done, come home to their families have some pizza, watch a
little TV and go to bed only to get up the next day and hit it again,
determined to make it a better place for generations to come.
On this 4th of July Celebrate all you have and all you have come
through. Celebrate the many great men and women who have made our
lives as we know them on this day, possible. We are living the dream.
God Bless America, God bless our troops and God bless you. You get your camp all set up ( Mis-Inclined is my
camp), then....Man, it's over, just like that. Time flies when your
having fun.
Once again this year I was a finalist for the Newfolk Competition.
There were 32 great artist to pick from, whittled down from 800
submissions. They pick 6 winners, in the end I came in 7th..Well I'll
keep trying. In someways it says a lot about your craft to have been
chosen a couple of times. To me it is reinforcement that i am still
writing quality songs, still there is still lots of room for
improvement for sure.
The line up this year was great, night in and night out and all
night long. I had a big time playing and singing in some grand circles
around the campfires, although there were no actually campfires due to
a burn ban, here in Texas we are in drought right now, and in bad need
of some rain. I thought for sure we would get rain during the
festival, but for the first time since i have been attending it did
not rain. Anyway, the festival was a success for little ol' me on many
fronts. I have a tentative tour booked for Canada in November, a
couple of house concerts to do and some just plain "sideman
guitarist"gigs i picked up while there. Also a couple of other things
that i am not able to talk about right now, but very nice (more on
those later)
Me an my pal, Jonathan Byrd played a few gigs together while he was
here for the fest. One especially nice one was at camp "Sweetness &
Light" on the last friday, after the main-stage performances were
through. My musical cohort from the H!X, RB Blackstone, played keys
with us and we had a great hour long show with about 100 people ion
attendance. It was really fun and great, receptive audience sitting in
lounge chairs and on the ground and in the street. Cool...very cool!
Back at home, remodeling starts up again, we are closing in on
finishing up the living room/kitchen, working on the ceilings (all
tin) and installing new lighting and ceiling fans and such, we are
getting close to actually having a normal living space again. We have
added lots of extra insulation and the AC feels really nice. We have
never had a air conditioned home before.
The kitchen is almost complete ( we love our new dishwasher) and the
next big step is to have all the sheetrock, taping and floating done
and then paint the walls, then we install all new floors and we are
good to go..at that point it will be party time at Morgan Manor...
Well that's quite enough for now. In the meantime, keep looking up
and hope to see you down the trail! This year is going by fast. It's already getting really hot here
in Devine. Lots has happened since i last wrote. I got a new I Mac and
it has been a trip getting it all set up. I have been unable, so far,
to use my e-mail address book, that is one reason i have not posted
here in a while, but slowly we are getting it back up and running.
Newfolk? Although it doesn't SOUND like it applies to me, it does.
For the second time in 3 years, i am once again a finalist. It is such
a great honor to be picked as one of the 32 our of 800 entries for the
Kerrville Newfolk Songwriter Competition. I will be performing on
Sunday May 25. If you have never been to Kerrville you really need to
carve out some time and come. It is a great experience for fans and
artist as well. Eighteen days of almost non-stop music. It is really a
great thing. This years line up is exceptional check out there web
site at
www.,Kerrvillefolkfestival.com
On the home front we continue to work on our house and much has been
done. We are just about through with the Kitchen renovation and we are
moving into the living room. It's a lot of work, but a lot of fun and
we are seeing progress everyday. A big party is planned as soon as we
get the living room completed and the new floors in.
I have designed the living room so that we can do house concerts
here on a semi-regular basis, but that is down the road. More news to
follow on that front.
All is well. My new solo CD "Serious" continue to fly off the shelf
and the H!X are playing some fine gigs and will be announcing the
release of there first studio CD soon.
In the meantime, Keep looking up and give thanks to the men and
women who serve , and have served, this country, fighting for freedom
throughout the world. It is because of our veterans that we have the
freedom to come and go as we please. It's 2008 and i can not do anything about it.
What a great year 2007 was and i look forward to more great things
this year.
My wife and i are in the process of finishing our house, it was
built in 1923. It was in pretty bad shape when we bought her and we
have been steadily bringing her back around. New foundation, big
bedroom addition, washroom, etc, but with my schedule getting more
and more full, i have had no time , or energy, to really dedicate to
finishing up our many, as yet undone projects, BUT, we have a man in
the family who is great at remodeling and we have hired him to come
in and do what needs to be done so we can get it finished. New roof,
new energy efficient windows, major kitchen remodel, new floors,
insulation and yes Air conditioning. It will take about 3 months. I
will be hiring on as one of his helpers and that will save us some
money. All this was made possible by my wife's lovely mother,
Earline, who upon her recent passing, left us a little nest egg that
we are using for this project.
Just purchased an old school bus which we will set up on our
property and use as Barbara's Art studio. This has long been a little
dream of her's to have a bus, so for Christmas I bought her one and
it is being delivered this week. So little by little we are getting
our place fixed up nicely.
Once we get the major work done I will be starting a monthly house
concert series here. It's all very exciting and time consuming. I
hope it will help create some space for Barbara and I to get back to
our creative selves and start producing in our respective fields
again.
I said that this year i was going to take it a little easier and
not play as much and dedicate myself to writing more, this is still
my goal. I have 30 or 40 songs in various stages of completion but
have lacked the time or energy to get the work done. But hey, i have
a whole new year ahead of me and i am looking forward and i am
looking up.. Your friend and fan Claude"Butch"Morgan
PS Forgot to mention this, but i just got my old Gibson Les Paul
(1958) Black Beauty, back together again. It has been apart since
1984. Man it is beautiful, I am having to learn to play all over
again, it is such a great guitar.
--
Claude"Butch" Morgan
603 Windy Knoll
Devine,Texas 78016
cell: 210.884.1572
http://www.butchmorgan.com

Vacation

Howdy Friends.

Thanks for dropping by..2008 is just about here. My wife and i always spend the week from Dec 26 to Jan 2 camping. We are headed to Garner State Park for the week. A time of reflection and tranquility among the big Cypress trees and the Frio river. It is always good for the muse, to get away from the clubs, bars and restaurants, to pull myself away from "work" and enjoy the guitar as an instrument instead of a tool. To push the pencil around and see what happens. Pull out my scrapes of paper and notes and struggle with the rhyme's and the music to see what falls out of me.

I pray for you ,a healthy & prosperous New Year, full of adventure, and new and old friends.

It's an exciting time to be alive. This year, 2007 I have played 235 gigs and driven 31,000 miles and never left the great state of Texas. For the most part they have been really good gigs, some better some worse, but i played one this week that took the cake for "bad".

I booked it through an on line booking agency. It read really nicely on the description . It was in a region of the state where I have limited exposure and where i am looking for more opportunities to perform. They paid pretty well.

It was suppose to be a "listening" room, which most songwriters really look forward to. I drove 330 miles one way to play. The venue was in the bar of a Hilton Hotel . It was during Happy Hour and was advertised as an all original music series for the "music" appreciator. It was a 2 hour gig..a very, very, long 2 hours.. I was set up in a room.. There were nice sofas and chairs....

but no one came into the room where i was playing. Everyone sat at the bar in the other room and watched TV while i played to "no one".. and when i say no one i mean no one. They had paid me up front and then.. they totally ignored me for the full two hours. Nobody said anything to me and no one applauded..not a sound came from the bar. I played two hours and not one person spoke to me or looked me in the eye.

The restroom was just outside the door from where i was playing. They had to walk within two foot of me to go to the restroom. They would walk past me and look into the empty room or look at their feet. It was one of the weirdest gigs that i have ever played and i drove (round trip) 660 miles. I played two hours with out a break just so i could leave as soon as possible. Since i didn't take a break I quit 20 minutes early. I broke down my equipment (I had to set up my own Sound system), loaded up my van and left. No one said anything to me.

I played good and pretended there were people in the room who where listening. Maybe everyone at the bar just figured i was crazy, since i was talking to an empty room. Anyway, it made me appreciate all the really good gigs that i am fortunate to play on an almost daily basis, where people listen and pay attention and respond and buy CD's and let you know they like ya..Man what a night.

I will not forget it for sure. I also won't be playing there again anytime soon. Now go out and see and hear one of your favorite artist and let them know you appreciate them, cause trust me, after a night like i just had, I really appreciate being appreciated. It has been a year full of new faces, new fans, and more importantly, new friends. I traveled 36,000 miles this year and played 200 dates all without leaving Texas. I am grateful this CHRISTmas for the many, many blessings that have been poured out upon me. I Love living in the land of the free and the home of the brave, and for being free to come and go as i please.

Thanks and prayer for our young men and women who are on foreign soil and in harms way while we are over here in the land of plenty. I pray they get their job done expediently and come home soon to enjoy what they have fought for..Freedom and Peace. No matter where you maybe on the war, you have got to support our troops and their mission. If you say you support the troops, but not the mission, that is like saying I love my team, but i don't want them to win. Come on now..pray for peace. Jesus taught us to love one another. I know from experience that that's easier said than done, but we have got to give it our BEST effort. Enjoy your families and friends this Christmas and put the CHRIST back in it. What's to not love about Jesus..spread it around..enjoy the season but don't forget the reason. God Bless you and God Bless America. Thanks for visiting and i hope to see you down the trail somewhere.

A Very Merry CHRISTmas and a JOYful New Year from Your musical pal, Claude"Butch"Morgan

<x-sigsep>
--
</x-sigsep>
Claude"Butch" Morgan
603 Windy Knoll
Devine,Texas 78016
cell: 210.884.1572
http://www.butchmorgan.com

Giving Thanks

This marks the 15th Year of the Nettie Morgan Thanksgiving Day Pancake Breakfast. A tradition my family started after i had come back from San Diego, Cal. I was out there with nothing to do. Broke down, no money. I was stranded and had little to be Thankful for( I thought). It was Easter morning 1989 and i was really feeling sorry for myself, just walking aimlessly on the beach. I know it was beautiful, but my attitude and situation would not permit me to see it. I came upon a man cooking pancakes. He ask me if i was hungry, to which i replied " Yes" He fed me pancakes till i was full. I don't remember to much about him, other than he was very kind. But i brought the memory of that Easter morning and those pancakes, back with me to Texas. When i shared that with my Mother she said " That's something we could do as a family", so we decided to do it on Thanksgiving morning. We knew that most of the homeless in San Antonio would get plenty to eat later in the day, so we figured we would give them a good breakfast and some hot coffee to jump start their Thanksgiving. It's been 15 years. My mom has gone to Her rest and so in her honor we call it the Nettie Morgan Thanksgiving day Pancake Breakfast.

It's a designated time for giving thanks. It's a day set aside. Just a day. One day, but shouldn't we be Thankful everyday? Everyday is a blessing in one way or another. Some day's are harder than others, but still God see's fit to bless us. Sometimes we really have to look for the blessings. They can be in the flight of a butterfly, a sunset or sunrise, the whimper of a baby, the beauty of the Hill country, the sound of a stream running across the stones. The touch of a hand, a kind word at just the right moment, or a sympathetic ear. A letter from a friend, a phone call. The list ,of course is endless, if we really think about it. But we all to many times, get hung up looking at what we don't have, or the mess we are in, or our dire circumstances, yes even in those things we should have a Thanksgiving attitude. It will maks our days better if we first count our blessing. Before the world hits you between the eyes, or knocks the wind out of you, think about what you do have and just say Thank you. Throw it out there in the ethers and see how much better feel.

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving. I mean it's like 84
degrees here right now..I got to go put on a sweater.. ha ha!
First things first..I am so grateful for the Veterans across the
land who have made it possible for us to live in peace, in this , the
greatest of all country's in the world. My dad Claude C Morgan Sr. is
a veteran of the II World War, the South pacific theater and i am a
vet from the Viet Nam area. Freedom is not free, it comes with a
price and many, many thousand have paid the ultimate price so that
people like you and me can go about our daily business and live lives
to the fullest. I am so grateful to all those who went before us and
to the one's who are in harms way right now. Keeping the war away
from our shores. Thank you, Thank you, thank you. you are our hero's
I have been having a good time playing and singing for a varied
assortment of fine music loving people at many fine new music venues
like the Rivercity Grille, where me and the H!X played last Saturday
nite. What a wonderful place. The stage hangs out over Marble Falls
Lake and is going to be a premier Texas Music venue as soon as the
word gets out.
On the CD front. The H!X "Really Live" has been getting some
regional air-play on KFAN in Fredericksberg,Tx., KSYM in San
Antonio,Tx.,Revolution radio in Kerrville, Tx. and we are just about
to do a mass mailing to many many radio stations in the greater Texas
area. In the meantime look for the H!X coming to a town near you.
I am looking down the road here and trying to plan a nice long,
artistic, break so that i can finish about 30 songs i have been
trying to get done. The problem with being your own promoter/booking
agent/handyman/driver etc. you end up not having much time to be
creative, so i am going to take a nice long "Creative" break here
pretty soon.
In the meantime I will be working (playing)like crazy so come out
and say howdy. ALSO PLEEZE sign my website guest book i would
appreciate knowing you visited..well hope to hear from you soon are
to see you down the trail somewhere, your musical pal,
Claude"Butch"Morgan
--
Claude"Butch" Morgan
603 Windy Knoll
Devine,Texas 78016
cell: 210.884.1572
http://www.butchmorgan.com

Texan Creed

Hell-o Friends and neighbors, fans and fun-sters..

Just saw this ad on TV . What in the world do i mean by
that? I haven't a clue. I just like the song, but I can't sing it
cause it says I'm a "Yankee" Doodle Dandy and well I ain't.. i am
from Texas. Best state with the best shape..
Just got back from the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance in Austin.
It was BIG fun and very rewarding on many levels. I meet lots of
great songwriters, heard lots of great songs, got inspired and fired
up to get busy writing and playing more. I ran the open mic two
different times during the four day event. The first night ,Thursday,
I managed to get 47 out of 59 songwriters up ..WOW..it went really
well and everyone was very cooperative. Anyway, I scored a couple of
house concerts and was invited to Canada and Colorado..So for me it
was good.
Back home and gearing up for the next H!X CD release Party Party
Wahoo in Marble Falls Tx. on Saturday November 10 at the River City
Grille. This is going to be a BIG FUN GIG...
Well keep looking up and keep giving thanks for living in the
greatest country on the planet, land of the free, home of the brave.
Pray for the troops who keep us safe over here, and I'll see ya' down
the trail. your musical pal CBM
--
Claude"Butch" Morgan
603 Windy Knoll
Devine,Texas 78016
cell: 210.884.1572
http://www.butchmorgan.com

Home again

It's nice to be home again. Back in Devine Tx. My yard ( about and
acre) is calling me, mother nature has been running free for the last
two weeks and she has done a fine job of giving me plenty to do in
the next few days.
I have been at the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Converence in
Austin Tx. for the past 3 days. It was a huge success on many levels
for me and many others. I inked in three different house Concerts and
one little tour in Cabada and some dates in Colorado so it was very
good for me personally. I, along with songwriter Jason Weems hosted a
panel on how to run a successful open mic, it was well attended and
received well.
I just got my new recorder and am in the process of producing my
first "In Home" Studio project. Probably get started on my new CD in
November. This will be a self produced project that will include all
new songs. Things are poppin' in
and around H!Xadelic Land. We are taking care of the details for our
CD promotional campaign on H!X "Really Live" We are at number 137 on
the Rebel radio chart and we are not even sure how they got the CD.
Anyway. The big kick off will be at Casbeers in San Antonio Tx. On
Sat. Sept. 15. After that date you will be able to catch the H!X in
and around Texas for a few months.
This is an experiment. My Blog has been down for a while so I am
just sending this one out to see if it will post. If we are
successful, i will return with more info. Wow..man it has been a hot one in south Texas. Hope you have a nice cool place to hang for the summer.
Howdy and welcome to my site. It's great to have you drop by. ALOT has been going on. We have finished our (The H!X) Augie Meyers project and now he is sending it off to his connection up north. Keep your fingers crossed and the prayers coming that something positive will take place soon. More details to follow, but for right now just know that Augie is placing the H!X in some very big hands.
The H!X CD is still in the works. We are all very excited about this record (CD). We are in and out of the studio as time become available. Salmon Peak www.salmonpeak.com (Mark Senko) has been very gracious in allowing us the use of his fine studio and we will be forever in his debt. If you are looking for a great studio, look no futhur than Salmon Peak in San Antonio Tx. It is the best
The Kerrville Folk Festival has come and gone. I was very fortunate to play the main stage with my friend and wonderful tunesmith Eric Taylor. His new CD is great. It's titled the Great Divide, and it's available at www.bluerubymusic.com I also played a set with Tom Prasada Rao and Cary Cooper ww.thedreamsicles.com, which was a lot of fun. This year was a very good yer for me at Kerrville, I made a lot of new friends and contacts, got a couple of house concerts, a little 9 day tour up north and hooked up with my songwriting buddy Jay Mankita for a little Texas tour in November www.jaymankita.com All in all it was a great time of wonderful music with great friends.
My wife and I have been working on our yard, planting grass and other such things. It has to be done in the early morning, it's too hot after about 11 a.m. But it is starting to look like a yard instead of a weed field. My neighbors may start speaking to me again soon. I am working on the outside of the house trying to get it ready to paint. We are building a screened in porch and several other projects, from our never ending project list.
Spent a great Fathers day with my Dad Claude C.Morgan Sr., a WWII Veteren ,and my best friend. We went to the lake and hung out with the rest of the family. Natalie, our grand daughter by my son Trevor and wife Karen, my oldest son Sean and his wife Georgett, assorted friends. We ate too much and had a great time. I am so fortunate to have such a GREAT family.
Well this is a little long winded. Hope your having a great time in life. Keep looking up, and hope to see you down the trail. This is my prayer.....
Just returned from a week in Austin where I attended the Folk Alliance National Conference. Myself, along with my songwriting buddies, Frank Meyer, George Ensle',Doug Fesler, and Bill Passaquala formed a group called, The Gazebo Song Group" and had a space in the exhibit hall. It was quite an experience, one I was not quite prepared for, but all in all i believe it was a worth while venture.
I made a lot of new contacts and played 13 different showcases in front of all new people, it was quite different than the small regional one I attended in Austin in October 05'. In contrast to the friendly and quite easily manuvered Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Conference ,this one was huge and I easliy got overwhelemed, but i sure learned alot about myself and where i am in regards to the national Talent that is out there. I look forward to next year in Memphis with The Gazebo Song Group a little more prepared this time.
I also had my fine old Alverez Yairi DY85 stolen, as well as my wallet. This did not occur at the Folk Alliance but at another location on the morning of Feb 13. The news of it quickly spread throughout the folk music community and many, many people made contributions towards replaciong my money and guitar, thanks in big part to my pal Tom Prasada Rao and Steve James and David LaMotte ( and many other annonynus people). I love the musical community and thank the Lord for such a great family.
I do not get my joy from a guitar or any other THING so the loss was simply that. i would like to have it back, but it isn't necessary for me to remain at peace and upbeat. One GREAT gift that i received because of the loss of my guitar was a reconnection to an old and great friend who recieved one of the numerous e-mail sent out by one of many musicians. he got an e-mail about Butch Morgan's guitar and my phone number was attached ( he did't get the e-mail from me, it came from someone in Austin who simply sent an e-mail out to there mailing list) so he called me. It was my best friend in High School that i had lost contact with in 1979. So because i lost my guitar i received something much more valuble,my old friend back in my life.
